Social Networking apps were in quite abundance at DemoFall07. One of the brightest stars I thought among the pack is a Silicon Valley based company called Graspr. This company describes themselves as a "social media and learning company". At its core, this company wants to allow communities to create and share "how to" videos that inspire people to learn new things and expand their horizons. They plan to create the largest user generated showcase for instructional content. What struck me about their technology was it ease of use. Their suite includes a video editor called the Graspr Editor which is intuitive and allows users with no experience to be able to edit their videos with simple drag and drop tools. The existing community - which currently includes about 10,000 videos is built around topic specific videos in a variety of interest areas including home and garden, cooking, crafts, sports among others.
Youtube, MySpace and FaceBook have proved that the world can come together and share, interact through video. With internet video consumers projected to triple by 2012 according to ABI Research to nearly one billion, Graspr may just be able to carve out success with a very niche concept. The system encompasses all the regular features we are all familiar with on social networking sites like sharing and bookmarks etc. It also includes a video search engine for consumers to easily find relevant videos of interest and easily jump to scenes that interest them. I personally have tons of VOB files in my collection I have been wanting to edit. I am looking forward to easily stitching them together using this software - without downloading and buying expensive video editing software and taking advantage of free storage. The company launched on Sept 24th and you can get more information about them at http://www.graspr.com
