In my last blog, I wrote about the innovative new technologies provided by Silicon Valley startup Mig33 in the area of mobile social networking. Google this week just acquired Jaiku, a software company with a service that allows communities to share their activities via exchanging photos, blogging , IM and SMS. Google's acquisition of Jaiku is further illustration that big players are really paying attention to the next platform for social networking - mobile devices.
The Jaiku Mobile application is similar to Microsoft's Communicator mobile, which displays a live phone book, displays various activity streams, availability and location of your contacts etc. Its not know how much Google paid to acquire this company. Another startup that provides similar functionality is Twitter based in San Francisco. Twitter just got a round of funding from Union Square Ventures. The Jaiku acquisition will definitely increase wide spread speculation that Google will soon be introducing a mobile phone into the marketplace as in this past week article in the New York times
With Google's recent bid to acquire DoubleClick, there is no doubt that Google intends to extend online advertising to mobile devices and its a no brainer to me how they intend to do this. In my humble opinion, its a winner and potential cash cow for whoever first introduces a low cost offering, with great form factors/ease of use running software that effectively combines advertising to social networking themes. See the New York Times article this past weekend. Microsoft, Apple, Carriers: I hope you're paying attention - there is a disruptive way around the corner targeted at mass market that may pull the carpet from under your feet. See details of the Google Jaiku acquisition and Q&A.
